Located in the heart of trendy Greenpoint in Brooklyn, Michelin-star restaurant Oxomoco brings a modern-twist to Mexican dining. The brainchild of woodfire pizza place Speedy Romeo chef Justin Bazdarich, Oxomoco is open for brunch, lunch and dinner, so it’s available round the clock to cater for your Mexican food craving.

The light, airy venue which used to be an old plumbing warehouse, has distinct Venice Beach vibes about it, forms a delightful backdrop while you enjoy your meal. Light woods and white plaster covered walls are decorated with hanging greenery. Curved, open booths along the walls provide an intimate seating option, or you can sea yourself at the bar or in front of the kitchen for something a little more interactive and fun.

The cocktail menu is a huge drawcard for this restaurant, especially if you are waiting for a table. If you are in the mood to party, why not start your night off with a frozen margarita or paloma which comes in a huge glass half the size of your head. Bar snacks such as spiced mango and lime and chili popcorn are the perfect drinking snacks while you wait for your food to arrive.

Taking his love of woodfire from Speedy Romeos, Justin used the ancient Mexican art of open-fire cooking, referred to as barbacoa, to give Oxomoco’s menu a distinctly charred flavour to the dishes. From lunch to dinner, the grill works overtime, charring everything from whole chickens, marinated lamb and chunks of steak, to the romain lettuce halves which are use in the Punta Verde Caesar salad. As soon as you have the first bite of your meal, this nod to the country’s heritage instantly transports you to a restaurant in the heart of Mexico itself.

The menu is expansive catering for a wide range of tastes and allergies. I would highly recommend trying some of the moles, salsas and purple masa tacos which are all house-made.

Menu highlights include the epic taco selection. Think options like lamb barbacoa, chicken, beet chorizo and masa tempura shrimp. There are also some delicious raw fish selections, and a popular pizza-sized tortilla covered with grilled corn, hot sauce, crema, melted cheese and fresh herbs. Finger licking good.

Bookings are recommended as this place fills up quickly, but if you have to wait, you can enjoy a drink on the front patio or sit at the long bar and enjoy a drink. The perfect venue for a fun night with friends or for a guaranteed winner for date night, Oxomoco is a must visit for any foodie.
