Masks are now a part of life. Probably not the fashion accessory I was envisaging in 2020 but hey, they’re here and I’ve been on the hunt to find one that is stylish (to go with my lockdown uniform), functional but also comfortable to wear. Well I can end my search now as I have found ones that tick all the boxes for me when it comes to a mask.

Uniqlo recently launched the AIRism mask,  a mask that offers protection and comfort for daily use. The AIRism Mask employs a triple-layer structure with a center layer that has a filter that delivers a bacterial filtration efficiency of 99% (initial value), blocking droplets and protecting the skin from bacteria, virus-contaminated particles, and pollen. Encasing the filter is the AIRism mesh fabric. The AIRism mask has been designed for repeated use, in ode to the desire by people to minimise their environmental  impact. You can wash with regular detergent and Uniqlo say that it retains its efficacy after 20 washes at 40 degrees.

The AIRism Mask is silky smooth on the skin. The inner AIRism layer is free of the stiffness or thickness typical of non-woven and cotton masks, maximising comfort. The triple-layer mesh structure keeps the mask light and thin, optimising breathability. I have found it really comfortable to wear as it’s been so soft on the skin plus I feel like I can breathe normally in it. Some masks I’ve had to spend some time adjusting my breathing but with the AIRism Mask I’ve just popped it on and gone about my business without having to adjust.

The mask comes in three sizes – S, M, L which provides options for those looking for a better fit for their mask. I wear a Medium size which is just perfect for my face.

The AIRism Masks is available in a  pack of three at $19.90 at all UNIQLO Australia stores and on uniqlo.com/au. The masks come in black and white colours.

Uniqlo do note that the AIRism Masks do not completely prevent infection (infiltration), advise that the mask should not be worn during intense physical activity and in hot weather, and adult supervision is required for masks purchased for children.
