This Winter has left my hair feeling just a bit average. Frequent use of styling tools in addition to the natural enemy of great hair – wind, rain and dryness from heating – has left my hair feeling a bit blah. As we prepare for the warmer months ahead and all that comes with it (thinking Spring Carnival, Wedding and party season) it’s good to get some tips on how we can maintain healthy hair, especially when we use styling tools. We spoke with Lauren McCowan, the Creative Director at Haircare Australia & Cloud Nine Ambassador to get her top tips for maintaining healthy hair when using styling tools. We also asked Lauren for her pick of a great style we could start using now as we head into Spring/Summer!

Hair check in

Winter is a great time to get your hair in check and ready for the summer sun and salty water. It’s incredibly important to ensure the temperature is on the right setting for you hair type otherwise you are stripping your hair of its moisture and causing damage.

Cloud Nine has multi-temperature settings allowing you to take control and achieve a beautiful result. For straightening I’d recommend 75-100 degrees for thin or damaged hair.  125-150 degrees for medium hair and 175 degrees for thick hair. 200 degrees is only for incredibly thick Latino/Asian hair. Anything above 200 degrees is for professionals only!

Pick the right styling tool for your hair

It’s important to select a styling tool that is suitable for your hair. For thin hair, I’d recommend the Cloud Nine Original Iron and for thick hair, Cloud Nine Wide Iron.

If you’re looking to create a look with more curls, then I’d use the Cloud Nine The Wand which will help create great curls. To create a more relaxed look with loose waves, then the Cloud Nine the waving wand will help.

Prepare your hair for styling

Your hair needs to have a certain level of moisture to both keep it healthy and to withstand the heat from your hot tool. A spritz of a leave in conditioner such as evo Day of Grace is a great way to give you an even base to work with.

A no fuss style that will help you look amazing

A quick and easy way to add some shape and volume to your hair this winter is the Iron Wave Plait. A versatile look that will take you into the warmer months.

Just follow these easy steps….

1.  Prep damp hair with Moroccanoil Light Treatment and dry into the hair. Split the hair into quarters and clip away.
