Life is uncertain. Eat dessert first. – Ernestine Ulmer

Summer isn’t over just yet so with a few warm days to come there is still plenty of time to enjoy tasty delights from some of our favourite ice cream and gelato bars.

Gelato Messina

Messina
Since Gelato Messina made its way across the border from Sydney to Melbourne and landed on Smith Street, there has been a line outside the door with people clambering to see what the hype all about.

The wait is worthwhile (the line moves quickly) and there are plenty of delicious flavours to choose from. You can chose from staple flavours such as salted caramel and white chocolate, chocolate fondant and classics such as pistachio and vanilla, or try something a little more daring from its rotating limited edition menu definitely make some time to visit Gelato Messina.

Gelato Messina 237 Smith Street, Fitzroy VIC 3065

Opening times: Sunday to Thursday: 12pm to 11.00pm, Friday and Saturday: 12pm to 11.30pm

Helados Jauja

This ice cream store is not what you’d expect on Lygon street. For one thing, it’s not Italian. And the second is that this ice cream is made the old fashioned way, without premixes, gelatine, colouring or flavouring.  The founder went to Argentina to learn the art of making ice cream, and came back with artisanal skills that she employs every day at Helados Jauja. The delectable ice-creams are individually made from scratch and there is an emphasis on letting the flavour of the natural ingredients shine through. So make sure you stop for some of their amazing Dulce de Leche, salted caramel, vanilla bean or salted chocolate ice creams.

Helados Jauja 254 Lygon Street, Carlton VIC 3053

Opening times: Daily 1:45pm until 10:00pm.
