In a world first, makeup enters the virtual era. Unlike other makeup simulators that worked on a static image, L’Oreal Paris Makeup Genius takes it to another level with a realistic, virtual result using the very latest developments in facial recognition, advanced technology that have been previously used in Hollywood studios and 3D video games.

After more than 10 years in development, researchers and animators have perfected Facial Recognition Technology, the genius behind L’Oréal Paris Makeup Genius. Unlike existing beauty apps that can merely render colours onto a pre-uploaded static image, Makeup Genius uses a highly- advanced facial mapping algorithm that allows women to try on makeup and play with different looks, all in real time. Makeup Genius captures 64 facial data points and 100 different facial expressions, making it intuitive enough to discern between the skin of the lips, eyes and other facial contours. It also allows the virtual makeup to move with you as you turn your head, change your facial expression and test out new looks at various angles and lighting conditions.

Last night, Cameron Wood from L’Oreal Paris explained how proud he was to be part of the L’Oreal team, “we are always looking forward to what exciting things we can do in the future. We have recognised the need to move from being produced focused to meet our consumer needs including service and creating experiences for both women and men”.

In only three easy steps, everyone can become a Makeup Genius. Step 1, Scan your face on your phone or tablet. Step 2, Select products or an entire look to try. Step 3 View your virtual makeup look and post, and share the look with others across all your social media platforms. You can share you look with L’Oreal Paris using #makeupgeniusau.

In the creation of L’Oréal Paris Makeup Genius, thousands of product tests were carried out by our researchers to ensure the makeup results were precisely reproduced. The app works in more than 400 different lighting conditions and takes into account all ethnicities to ensure the resolution and performance of the makeup – including texture, finish and colour – are all accurate. L’Oréal Paris Makeup Designer, Karim Rahman, and Colour Designer, Eva Yean, worked closely with the team checking the finished result of every colour, shape and texture to guarantee the most realistic designer makeup look possible.
