Timelessness sets the foundation for Sol Sana’s Spring 2015 offering, now available at Glue Store. To celebrate the footwear label’s latest collection and newest retailer, we spoke to the label’s founder, Sara Caverley, about all things shoes.

Sol Sana's Sara Caverley

Sol Sana produce four collections a year that boast Sara’s personal aesthetic of simplicity with a textural twist, weaving vintage silhouettes with modern accents that pay tribute to the high-end runway styles gracing the international catwalks.

Gemma: You launched Sol Sana in 2011. Was the fashion industry a place you always saw yourself working?

Sara: I had been working in fashion for a few years before I launched Sol Sana. Since as far back as I can remember I have always been fascinated with the industry and  the whole creative process involved with design.

G: How has the label evolved over the last 4 years?

S: We started with just a few accounts across the east coast of Australia and now we have over 500 accounts globally, including retail giants Nordstrom’s, Nasty Gal, Revolve, Topshop, Urban Outfitters, Shopbop but to name a few, as well as local retailers such as David Jones, The Iconic and Tuchuzy and now Glue Store. Creatively I think we have really grown up over the past 4 years and our styling really has become more minimalistic .. which I love!

G: How would you describe the quintessential Sol Sana woman?

S: She is pretty laid back but does love her fashion. We really try to design for all age groups so there is something on offer for a wider market.

G: This season has seen you experiment with new textures and pops of bold cobalt and maroon. How do you take global trends and translate them into footwear? I can imagine the process would be harder given that you’re working with such a small surface area!

S: Normally there is always a few very distinctive trends coming though in overseas markets so I always take inspiration from the this and just add a more commercial element to it. I still do take inspiration from the Apparel world.. Say if I see Mesh or faux-fur trending I will try to incorporate these materials into a design.

G: If you had to pick a hero piece from your Spring ’15 collection, which would it be and why?

S: It would be the Lucy Slide in Black Croc emboss. I love this style because it really is simplicity at its best and by adding the textural element of the Emboss croc it really makes this style pop.

G: Is there a footwear trend you want to see buried for good?

S: I always say this and I stand by it!…. CROCS!! Haha

G: Can you give us a hint as to what might be coming next season for Sol Sana?

S: Sure! Next season will be an extension of Spring. Easy to wear shapes including Mules, Slides, Block heels and a few dressier options including a few killer gladiator lace ups. Excited!  We have added highlights of Studding, Velcro and fringing that give this range a really edgy twist.

G: Finally, as a bonafide shoe expert- what is the secret to lasting all night in heels?!

S: This is a tricky one! I personally live in a good Block heel. Super comfy and less likely to kill your feet.
