We are Handsome need no introduction. Their iconic swimwear are on the top of every summer must have list, and now, are moving to inject their signature prints into activewear. We speak to the design minds behind the label, Jeremy and Katinka Somers, about the move into activewear, picking prints, and their favourite pieces in the collection.
What prompted the move into activewear? Was it always something that you had wanted to expand into?
“It was such a natural progression. We’ve always designed and produced the things that fit into our lives, and those that befit an active, summer filled and outdoor lifestyle. We’re big into exercise, swimming, hiking, bike riding and everything in between, and the progression to activewear was really organic”.
You have partnered with Shopbop for the release of some key styles; how did this partnership come about?
“Again, very organically – we’ve had a great relationship with Shopbop for a long time and they we’re really excited about moving into the active space with us”.
Did your design process change when designing activewear from designing swimwear, or did you approach it in a similar way?
“We focused on the technical and functional aspect, bringing our wealth of fit, aesthetic and print knowledge to the design process. It’s something that everyone is our organisation and social circles are familiar with – we had A LOT of willing test participants!
We of course explored some new construction techniques we weren’t familiar with, and of course new materials, details and styles/ All in all our activewear line took a year in development, we wanted to ensure we we’re producing the best quality line possible”.
The collection is full of amazing prints, what inspired them?
“These prints are some of our favourites from collections past. We wanted to create a small but diverse range that would suit even the most conservative dresser”.
What are your must haves from the collection?
“Each piece has been designed with a particular activity set in mind and given how active as an organisation we are they’re all must haves! If pushed to pick favourites, it would be the T Back Bra, providing perfect support and a flattering fit it works as a swim piece too. The capri’s work across the seasons and sit just below the knee, perfect for featuring toned calves”.
