The Melbourne Fringe Festival kicked off on Friday and sees over 400 events by 6000 artists in over 160 venues across Melbourne and regional Victoria until 4 October. This year the Melbourne Fringe Festival celebrates it’s thirty third year and is one of Australia’s largest multi-form festivals that develops and champions independent arts.

At the centre of the program, is the Fringe Hub, a place to begin and finish your festival experience. Over the course of the festival the Fringe Hub will showcase the very best of Australian independent art and artists: from cutting edge contemporary dance to headline comedy; from brand new works of theatre to the besequined queens of cabaret; the Fringe Hub is set to transform North Melbourne (Arts House, Lithuanian Club & Errol’s Cafe – Queensberry and Errol Streets) into the epicentre of Melbourne Fringe Festival.

Some of the fantastic shows include the following shows.

Double D, The Dolly Parton Cabaret

082A059 (1)
Double D features the very best of Dolly Parton in this comedic tribute to the queen of country music. Alongside Diablo, her sassy cowboy sidekick, Dolly will have you in fits as she shares her rags to riches story, complete with excessive costumes and all the great songs that helped her on her way. The production comes from recent WAAPA graduates Eloise Cassidy (Parton) and Max Bimbi (Diablo). The Double D duo put their own hilarious spin on Dolly’s incredible career, providing a brand new insight into this Backwoods Barbie’s Coat of Many Colors, dishing the dirt on Jolene and detailing the dullness of a 9 to 5 life. No wig will be left un-styled, no bra unfilled, and no song unsung.

Double D, The Dolly Parton Cabaret

 Frankly Winehouse Winehouse1

This Fringe, meet Amy Winehouse, back from the grave. Devised and performed by Fringe Festival newcomer Ashleigh Kreveld (Impromptunes, HAIR: Summer of Love), this is an all out cabaret experience featuring all the soul, sass and vulnerability of this late modern legend. Frankly Winehouse, featuring Ashleigh Kreveld as Amy Winehouse and Stephanie-Jane Lendowen-Lowe on piano, plays as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival at the Butterfly Club Downstairs from Tuesday 22nd September. Ashleigh Kreveld steps into the world of Winehouse – delving well past the beehive, caked-on eyeliner and cleavage, and into the damaged, but divine, rawness of Amy Winehouse. Featuring all the gags, eye-rolls and witty repartee of the cheeky Amy, watch this diva delve into her life of addiction, pop idols, f*ck me pumps and what really held that hair up. Featuring all the tunes of the glorious Winehouse herself, plus some killer covers, this cabaret tells the story through each brilliantly constructed, gin-soaked and smoky ditty Winehouse ever wrote. Date & Time: 22 September to 27 September (no Friday), 10pm Cost:  Adult $32, Concession $28 Venue: The Butterfly Club Downstairs, Carson Place, Off Little Collins Street MELBOURNE 3000 Visit melbournefringe.com.au or call (03) 9660 9666 to book Frankly Winehouse
