You were a successful makeup artist before making the transition into the jewellery industry. What inspired this career change?

Travelling all over the world to exotic destinations whilst I was a makeup artist inspired me to design a delicate jewellery range. I saw a gap in the market for feminine and fine spirited jewellery. I started designing on a trip away and it just evolved from there!

What was the biggest challenge you faced when launching your own jewellery line in 2012?

The biggest challenge for me was the fact that I was still a full time freelance makeup artist. For the first year it was like a juggling act until I realized that I had to put all my energy and concentration into one.  Obviously, I chose jewellery and I am really enjoying it!

What’s been the biggest highlight since launching By Charlotte?

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wearing By Charlotte on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar!

Your designs are very unique. Where do you look for inspiration and what process do you undertake to take concepts and turn them into the finished product?

I have a love for gorgeous stones. A lot of the inspiration for my designs come from the beauty and meaning of stones. I’m also inspired by my travels to India and Bali. My Lotus Star collection was inspired by the beautiful adornments that the Indian women were wearing on the streets.

Your stunning designs have been worn by some of the most beautiful women in the business including Lara Bingle, Jennifer Hawkins and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Who would you love to see in By Charlotte and why?

I’ve been so lucky to have such beautiful women wearing my jewelry. It’s always so nice to see that the jewelry is loved. I would love to see Cate Blanchett in By Charlotte as she’s one of my favourite actresses. Oh, and I would love to see Alessandra Ambrosio wearing the jewellery!

How do you style your By Charlotte designs?

My designs are made for layering. I love wearing quite a few rings at the same time. I also love mixing up different lengths of necklaces for a boho-layered look. Most of my earrings are also sold individually, so they’re perfect for girls who have a few piercings and like to layer them up their ear.

You are very active on social media. How has it helped grow your business?

Without social media I doubt I would have had such success. Instagram has been great for getting the brand out there.  It’s been an amazing platform for promoting the brand. We try to post everyday to inform our followers on what’s new, who’s wearing the brand and how they can wear the pieces!

What mantra do you live by?

Be kind to yourself.

What are your makeup bag must haves?

My duo bronzer and beach tint from Becca, Chanel Volumizing mascara, The Base by Lara Bingle Body Oil, and the tinted Lanolips lip balm.

What exciting things do you have planned for By Charlotte?

We are in the midst of designing the new collection for summer as well as our second luxe range. We’re also looking forward to the William Street, Paddington party on October the 17th, which we’ll be combining with the opening party for my first flagship store at 42 William Street, Paddington.
