Fashion is a tough industry. It’s particularly hard for emerging designers, trying to stand out amongst all the hopefuls. There is no doubt up-and-coming designer Matea Saule has the dedication and work ethic to develop a long career for herself. Her label Matea Designs presents a collection of classic basics, re-designed with a modern and flirty twist. We caught up with the young designer to find out more about her background, style and what she has planned for the future.

We are loving your label Matea Designs! Can you tell us how you started it?

I started by brand as a hobby when I was 19. I loved sewing outfits for myself and friends for weekend outings. Demand for the product grew from there and there’s when I decided to give life to “Matea Designs”.

Fashion is a competitive industry. What are some of the challenges you’ve faced getting your label off the ground and to where it is today?

It is a VERY competitive industry, like any creative industry I guess. Some of the major challenges I have faced would be when you face a difficult period in your business you begin to doubt your dream and passion, I think doubting my dream was a big challenge for me at one point. But it’s all about perseverance and determination to see those times through.

A lot of designers are turning to social media to promote their labels. How have you used it to help connect with your customers and share your designs?

Yes, social media platforms are definitely the new way of marketing a brand. So far I have predominantly focused on Instagram as I feel it’s the easiest one to interact with my customers. It becomes so much easier for them to scroll down their news need and see an image of a garment and like it, instead of using a platform like twitter that is focused on writing more so than imagery. I feel that people interact better with images, easier for them to absorb the information.

Where do you get inspirations for your designs from?

I am always on the look out for things that could inspire my next creation, from shares and textures right through to mother nature. Travel is a big inspiration for me, it really gets my creativity going.

Who would you love to see in your designs?

Kate Moss, huge style icon for me!

How would you describe your personal style and what pieces are on high rotation in your wardrobe?

My personal style is quite reflective of the way I design my collection, simple elegance and edgy sexiness. I love pieces that can be mixed and matched with other items in the wardrobe. Two items that are a must in my wardrobe and that I wear ALL the time are black leather biker jacket and a sexy black pencil skirt. Can’t go wrong with those!

What are some of the hottest trends we can expect to see this season?

I think this season we’ll be seeing a lot of midriff, cropped tops paired with a high waist pencil skirt. I feel this is look with still be trending this season.

What exciting things are you working on this year?

This year my main goal is to really establish and consolidate my style. I am very excited to for the launch of my Winter 14’ collection. I adore winter fashion, I feel that as a designer I can create pieces that are a lot more substantial.
