Winter is here. Temperatures have plummeted and skies have greyed. It’s a timely reminder to reevaluate our skincare regime to make sure we’re doing all we can to keep our skin in tip top condition as we head into the depths of Winter and beyond.

We’ve gone to speak to some of our friends to bring you some top tips to help you through the season and I’ve picked my favourites for this season that I’m currently using (and yes, I have multiple products on the go!)

Hydration

“Our skin tends to be drier during winter due to a reduction in air humidity, meaning there is less water in the atmosphere to help naturally moisturise our skin. This affects our skin barrier and leads to sensitivity, dryness and irritation” says Dr Tania Romano, Scientific and Education Communications Manager at SkinCeuticals.

“The goal in winter is to increase and maintain skin hydration, so there’s multiple ingredients people should be looking out for in their beauty regime to boost skin hydration”, Dr Tania continued.

Top picks to help hydration….

SkinCeuticals HA Intensifier ($156) – available at www.skinceuticals.com.au

Drunk Elephant F-Balm Electrolyte Waterfacial ™ ($86) and Emma Lewisham Skinreset Face Serum ($150), both available at www.mecca.com.au

Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate ($92), available at www.kiehls.com.au

IT Cosmetics Confidence in a Cream Supercharged Hydrating moisturiser (60ml, $82), available at www.itcosmetics.com.au

Protection

“Cold harsh winds and low temperatures can damage your skin’s natural barrier, leaving it vulnerable to environmental stressors. Adding a protective layer of a moisturiser or facial oil can help to shield your skin from these elements and prevent moisture loss. I always recommends an SPF even in winter. You are less likely to burn in winter with UVB (but you still can). But UVA is present all year long and can penetrate through clouds and windows and these are the rays that age our skin.” says Erin Gorman, MECCA’s Head of Skincare

Top picks to protect your skin…

Mecca Cosmetica To Save Face Hydrating Sunscreen SPF50+ ($42) and Mecca Cosmetica To Save Face SPF50+ Brightening Serum. Both available at www.mecca.com.au

Exfoliation

We know that cold weather can still dry out your skin despite your best efforts, leaving dead skin cells to accumulate on your skin. Try to incorporate a gentle peel or scrub as part of your routine to slough away dead skin and encourage skin renewal and access for products to absorb into the skin.

But keep in mind that it’s suggested that you use a strong exfoliator once or twice a week and not every day (unless it’s a gentle exfoliator)

I love….

Glow Recipe Watermelon AHA Night Treatment ($67) and  Tatcha The Rice Polish ($113), both available at www.mecca.com.au

Trinny London’s TipToe In PHA Exfoliant ($65) available at Trinnylondon.com/au

Beaute Pacifique Bio Dermabrasion Peeling Wipes ($60) from Beaute-Pacifique.com/au

Repair

“A change in the weather elements can cause skin irritation, redness, and inflammation. Using products with anti-inflammatory ingredients like niacinamide, ceramides, and squalene can help to soothe and repair your skin whilst keeping it hydrated, however it’s important to remember the skin is amazing for repairing itself but we have to give it time to heal and not to rush it or overload it with too many active ingredients.” Says Erin Gorman, MECCA’s Head of Skincare

I love these to repair…

Tatcha Dewy Skin Cream ($104), Drunk Elephant Protini ($109) and Augustinus Bader, The Cream (30ml, $271) – all available at www.mecca.com.au

Liberty Belle RX Date Night Leave-On Deep Hydration Mask  ($138), available at www.libertybelle.com.au
