After working with NARS for the past 14 seasons for his New York Fashion Week Runway shows, it only seemed like a natural progression for designer Phillip Lim to collaborate with the prestigious beauty company on a collection of beautiful nail colours.

Lim’s exclusive 8 colour range is based on a palette of rich jewel tones and contrasting neutrals, which are mirrored in his elegant designs. Describing the colours, Lim said “it’s not the typical palette, you wouldn’t think of pairing these colours together in a collection, but each shade has its own emotional value. For example, bringing in that crazy metallic blue and pairing it with this burnt orange and antique white, and black. I think it all comes from a gut feeling, and it all comes from the evolution of colour.” The high gloss finish is the perfect match for the modern aesthetic of Lim’s beautifully tailored pieces.

Speaking about why the collaboration was a natural fit for his brand, Lim said “I’ve always appreciated the aesthetic of NARS as a whole. For me, I’m attracted to everything about NARS, the packaging, the graphics and the sense of luxury that isn’t too ostentatious. It’s so modern and luxurious, which is very on par with the 3.1 Phillip Lim universe.”

Talking about how he selected the colours for the collection, Lim said “I call them colours that exist in the shadows because at first glance, you see one colour in the daylight and at night, you see another colour. It also depends on what you wear. They are very transitional, very adaptable. I like colours that you can actually discover. To me, these colours are the essential 3.1 Phillip Lim colours. These are my colours. The colours that constantly inspire me, they are constantly threaded in everything I do. Every single shade or colour has appeared in the collections for the whole history of the company. They are my go-to colours.”

The 3.1 Phillip Lim for NARS nail collection is exclusively available to purchase at Mecca Cosmetica from 24 August 2014. The 8 colour set retails for $30 and comes in a beautifully crafted covetable canvas pochette designed exclusively for the collection.
