“Andy Warhol realized art could take any form. Putting on your makeup is a kind of self-portrait.” –François Nars (Creator, NARS Cosmetics)

Inspired by the legendary artist Andy Warhol, NARS recently launched the limited edition Andy Warhol Collection. The collection embodies the cool, image-rich, and character-laden world of Andy Warhol, featuring bright and graphic makeup palettes. The new line contains make-up influenced by the pop icon’s silvery Factory, and his easily-recognisable work featuring silkscreened superstars and avant-garde films.

The 29-piece line, created in partnership with The Andy Warhol Foundation, coincides with the 25th anniversary of Warhol’s death. It is also the largest collaboration for both the foundation and NARS. Michael Hermann, licensing director for the Warhol Foundation, says collaborating with NARS was appropriate because of its “fearless, cutting-edge approach”. Warhol believed, “Everybody is a superstar. At least for 15 minutes” and a trademark look was vital to achieving superstar status. The artist saw makeup as a way to embody his approach that “if everybody’s not a beauty, then nobody is”.

Products include an authentic 16mm film canister with the face of Edie Sedgwick, a quintessential sixties ‘It Girl’ and Andy Warhol’s most memorable muse. A deluxe cosmetics bag is printed with the face of Candy Darling, the ultimate blond bombshell and Andy Warhol’s greatest actress, who considered beauty to be a duty.

The Andy Warhol Debbie Harry Eye and Cheek Palette ($105) includes eye-shadow shades in White Shimmer, Sparkling Turquoise, Starry Black and Twinkling Purple, as well as blush colours in Brilliant Cream and Shimmering Pink Champagne. Pop star Debbie Harry was Warhol’s friend and a model in his artwork. The NARS palette sparkles with glitter and diamond powder made from micronized diamonds to reflect Warhol’s use of “Diamond Dust”.
