Shine Skin and Body recently moved into a beautiful new salon in Richmond where visitors can experience the best in luxurious treatments.  We caught up with founder and owner, Sheridan to talk to her about all things beauty.

Congratulations on the new Shine Skin and Body Salon in Richmond. It’s a beautiful beauty oasis! You’re well known for your extraction facials. What makes your extraction facials different?

Thank you, we are very happy here!

Our extraction facials are definitely something which sets us apart from other salons, what makes ours so unique stems back to our approach. First, we complete a very in-depth consultation and skin analysis to help identify the cause of the problem, which is just as important as the facial. If the acne is a result of a dairy intolerance for example, our facials will only do so much as they target the surface of the skin, therefore we need a holistic approach. Through our analysis we can customise the treatment plan and achieve maximum results.

The second factor which makes our extraction facials special is the technique, my husband has coined the ‘wiggle technique’ – basically we treat the skin as gently as possible to clear it. Our therapists undergo intensive training to ensure that they have mastered the technique.

Finally, time is the other element which makes out treatments so successful. We offer 70 minute treatments and up to 45 minutes can be spent on extractions – this gives us the opportunity to be thorough in the treatment, take our time to fully remove any extractions and really clear the skin out as much as possible.

Why should you do an extraction facial and how often should you do it?

Extraction facials are suitable for anyone, people who suffer from anything like blackheads and hormonal breakouts through to those suffering with fully inflamed acne.

The treatment plan differs depending the severity of the acne, it can be as frequent as a facial weekly or fortnightly for extremely severe acne, then the treatments can taper off to once every four weeks when we start to see results.

Shine Skin and Body also offers specialised treatments for acne. People may be hesitant to undertake hands on treatment for their acne. How do you help acne sufferers?

There has actually been a rise in people preferring the ‘hands on’ approach to treating acne, in lieu of the strong prescription medication which was quite popular for some time. People are looking for much more holistic methods of treatment, as opposed to resorting to a drug-based treatment.

Sadly, acne can have a real impact on individual confidence and self-worth. Clients often tell us they hate how they look and don’t want to be seen in public. I even had a client who didn’t want to be head bridesmaid at her best friend’s wedding because she was so insecure about her skin. This is the biggest focus for us – we want to give people back their confidence and self-esteem with our treatments.

As we move towards the cooler months of the year, what’s your top tip to help maintain good skin?

Hydration is always an important factor in skincare, even with acne. People tend to use products containing very harsh ingredients which further irritate acne and strip the skin of its natural moisture. We have enzymatic processes that naturally occur in the skin to keep it healthy, without hydration these natural processes do not function efficiently, causing further irritations to the skin. A great product to give your skin that boost of hydration during the cooler months is a serum with hyaluronic acid.

For those with a focus on anti-ageing, what are your top beauty tips to help (treatments, products etc)

Vitamin A is an essential – we start losing the production of collagen in our skin in our 20’s, so it is really crucial we use products with ingredients that assist with collagen production. At Shine Skin & Body we offer Vitamin A Facials in four different degrees of strength, we usually recommend a course of six treatments, with one treatment every three weeks.

I also personally recommend using an eye cream in your skincare routine from a young age. I started using one at 21 and it has made the world of difference!

The other one to consider is a neck cream, we often see beautiful, youthful looking skin on the face which is then contrasted with crepey neck skin, which hasn’t been looked after.

What are your must-have beauty items?

Without a doubt you need to have products which contain Vitamins A and B to help keep the skin looking fresh and fabulous. Vitamin A assists with the structure and overall health of your skin, while Vitamin B gives your skin a natural radiance and helps balance oil while maintaining the level of water in your skin. Some of our favourite products we offer to clients for maximum Vitamin A and B benefits include Aspect Extreme B 17 and Cosmedix Define Age-Defying Treatment.

I also wouldn’t leave the house without wearing sunscreen – the best anti-ageing product you could ever use!
