While countless fashion fiends flock to get a glimpse of Jean Paul Gaultier’s exhibit at the National Gallery of Victoria, a pair of designers closer to home have been working on something special for the little ones in your life. Luke Sales and Anna Plunkett, better known as Romance Was Born are the latest curators of NGV’s children’s gallery, and have created a kaleidoscopic world of creativity, whimsy, and couture, appropriately titled Express Yourself.

IMG_2586One could never accuse Luke and Anna of shying away from a little embellishment, and the interactive exhibit is reflective of that. Over the four room instalment, fashion, art, and Australian pop culture icons blend together all in the name of encouraging the art of the younger generation.

Children can create their own artwork on iPads set out in front of colour coordinated collections of inspirational objects (which can be emailed for future prints in the pride of place at home), play in the virtual ponds set up in the Australiana room, and design their own jewellery while low key instrumental takes of Madonna hum in the background.

It’s not just for kids though; each fanciful installation is enough to bring out your inner child, and for the very fashion conscious, installations of past couture works are on display – all with a fun, descriptive story of the garments conception.

Experience the exhibit for yourself on the ground floor of NGV International, 180 St Kilda Road. Entry is free and it’s running now until the end of March next year.
