Mondo Gelateria has made a splash on Elizabeth Street now that it’s open, bringing a globe-trotting approach to artisanal gelato in the heart of the CBD. Led by Owner and Gelato Artist Rio Olivetti, who trained under Stefano Tarquinio of Carpigiani Gelato University in Bologna, Mondo pairs world-class gelato craftsmanship with inventive flavours designed to intrigue and delight. Open from 7:30 AM to 11:30 PM, seven days a week, the venue is perfectly timed for morning coffee runs, daytime sweet cravings and late-night dessert stops, with hand-crafted celebration cakes and specialty coffee rounding out the offering.
Housed within a beautifully restored 150-year-old building, the bright and airy space has been designed by Aydnco Commercial Interiors to blend heritage charm with contemporary flair. Dusty peach walls, ornate cornices and a coffered ceiling frame a striking light installation in the shape of Mondo’s sun emblem, casting warmth across the room. Inside, banquet seating and a long dessert-filled bar showcase ice-cold mountains of gelato piled high with fruits, nuts, cake bites and cookies, with a rotating menu of 28 flavours inspired by global tastes from China and Japan to Italy and America, alongside five signature house favourites including Black Forest Gâteau, Pistachio Crunch and Lemon Cheesecake.
Beyond gelato, Mondo’s offering extends to delicate, designer pastry led by acclaimed Taiwanese pastry chefs Peini Yu and Jasper Yang, with seasonal cakes, petit gâteaux, eclairs and brioche baked fresh daily. A specialty aperitif bar will serve limoncello-infused gelato flights and monthly flavour concepts from around the world, while Veneziano Roasters coffee anchors the menu with creative cold brew concoctions like Tokyo Drift and Casablanca Dusk.
As night falls, DJs will soundtrack late-night sessions until 11:30 PM, cementing Mondo Gelateria as a whimsical new destination for flavour, fun and community in Melbourne’s CBD.
