Melbourne’s pub scene has a bold new player with the launch of Hickens Hotel, officially opening on the corner of Russell and Little Collins Streets. Following a $12 million renovation, the iconic site has been transformed into a four-level pub, complete with a rooftop bar, a dedicated sports and entertainment floor, and the country’s first-ever Carlton Draught bar. Designed with socialising, sport and laid-back fun in mind, Hickens Hotel blends Melbourne’s love of pubs with a playful retro twist.
Downstairs, locals and visitors can settle into the Hickens Front Bar for a casual pint and a bit of people-watching. Just around the corner is The Carlton Lounge — a standout feature that celebrates Australia’s beloved brew with copper tank-fresh Carlton Draught, retro 70s charm, and memorabilia that nods to the good old days. There’s also a pool table for some friendly competition and acoustic tunes from Thursday to Sunday.
Food lovers can head up to Level One for a dining experience that puts a nostalgic spin on pub classics — like Cheese & Vegemite Garlic Bread, Sticky Honey Chicken, Crab & Corn ‘Fish Fingers’ and hearty Aussie pies. For sports fans, Abe’s Athletic Hall on Level Two is a dedicated haven, complete with massive screens, arcade games, karaoke rooms, and booth seating — ideal for game day packages or just hanging out with mates. Come Monday or Wednesday nights, you’ll also find trivia and pool comps heating up the weeknight action.
At the top, the rooftop delivers sweeping city views and is set to become a go-to spot for Friday knock-offs, weekend drinks, or an easy lunch in the sun. With live sport, live music, trivia, karaoke and more on rotation, Hickens Hotel is positioning itself as Melbourne’s most versatile new pub. Venue Manager Giuseppe Lacava says, “We’ve taken Abe Hicken’s legacy and turned it into a celebration of sport, nostalgia and great pub culture — there really is something for everyone here.”
