Need a good burger? Then you need to make it to Meat Frankie, a retro burger bar located on Lygon Street, Brunswick. Inspired by a classic American burger joint, owner Frank Scardamaglia has made Meat Frankie his own with a straightforward menu and a fit out that matches the food. Think American diner with booths, counters, stools, and an old school menu on the wall.
Unlike other burger places, Meat Frankie keeps its menu simple. Offering classic American-style burgers, hot dogs, fries and shakes, Meat Frankie doesn’t over complicate their offering – choose between a hamburger, cheeseburger or bacon burger and then customise with your choice of toppings (lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, jalapenos and grilled mushrooms). The beef patty is juicy and well seasoned, and cooked just right. The addition of the toppings work harmoniously with the beef patty to deliver a holistic delight. And, if you can, try Frankie’s sauce – a delicious concoction made on site that really elevates the burger.
If burgers aren’t your thing then hot dogs are also on the menu. Classic, Chilli or LA are options and we enjoyed the latter. Pork sausage with mustard, tomato sauce and jalapenos. I was a bit skeptical of the jalapenos but they added an extra hit to the hot dog so would definitely recommend giving it a go.
What rounded our meal was the addition of Cheesy Bacon Fries – crinkle cut fries with a deliciously flavoured cheese sauce (made in house with a selection of cheeses) and sprinkled with bacon bits and spring onions. Bacon and spring onions aside, what makes the dish is the cheese sauce. Cheese fries are one of the things I secretly love to eat in the States but it is something I’ve never been able to find here…until now. I loved the taste of the cheese sauce – flavoursome without being overly cheesy – and the texture is just perfect to match the crispiness of the fries. A must-have.
Meat Frankie is probably the closest you’ll get to an American burger experience here in Melbourne and worth a visit to try out their version of the classic American Burger menu!
