Kmart Australia has launched its 36th annual Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal together with founding charity partner, The Salvation Army, once again calling for support with any gift or monetary contributions in-store and online.

With the generous support of the community, the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal has become Australia’s largest and longest-running gift collection drive and has donated over $5.6 million in funding and distributed 10 million gifts to those in need at Christmas. Kmart is aiming to raise over half a million dollars for the Appeal in 2023 as well as collect 300,000 gifts to help those in need at Christmas and beyond.

This year, Kmart’s long standing charity partner, The Salvation Army is anticipating this Christmas will be one of the busiest they have seen. Research shows that previously comfortable Australians are now struggling to pay rent, transport, food, childcare and education1, with 22% of Australians significantly struggling2 – and more than 760,000 Australians will be living in poverty this Christmas.

The theme of this year’s Appeal is ‘Join us in creating a positive change this Christmas’, which encourages the community to come together and, if possible, contribute a new and unwrapped gift under the Wishing Tree at any Kmart and K hub store or make a monetary contribution across in-store or online. The ongoing support of everyone at this significant time of the year will make an incredible difference to the lives of so many Australians who need a helping hand.

How to get involved

There are so many ways to get involved in the 2023 Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal, including:

Physical gifting

Contributing a new and unwrapped gift under any Wishing Tree at any Kmart store.  People are encouraged to choose a practical gift and consider gifts for older kids as well to ensure nobody misses out, as we are often overwhelmed with gifts for younger children.

Suggested gifts include:

  • Headphones
  • Backpacks
  • Console games
  • Jewellery
  • Beauty products
  • Hair care appliances
  • Gift cards

Financial contributions

Financial contributions can be made easily too, in several different ways:

  • Self-checkout: When shopping in store at Kmart, click the Wishing Tree logo on the self-serve check out to add a donation to any transaction.
  • Gold coin donation: Drop a gold coin into a collection box at any Kmart or K hub register.
  • Give online: Scan the Wishing Tree QR code found in store or on the Appeal website to donate any amount.
