When it comes to winter, it’s not just your skin that you have to worry about drying out. Your hair will need extra attention to ensure it doesn’t get damaged by the change in weather conditions.

We’ve rounded out our top tips to help your hair looking and feeling great this winter.

TREAT YOUR HAIR

During winter, it’s tempting to sit around a heater all day to keep warm. While this can be drying for your skin, if you don’t drink enough water, this can play havoc on your hair too. While it’s important to keep hydrated, you can invest in a good treatment to apply once a week to ensure your hair receives all the necessary nourishment it needs.

PROTECT YOUR HAIR FROM HEAT

The drop in temperature means it’s tempting to make your showers hotter, use a hair dryer for longer to dry your hair and spend all day next to a heater. Extra heat will not only dry out your hair making it susceptible to breaking, but your scalp as well, increasing the chance of dandruff. If you need to dry your hair, keep your hair dryer at least 20cms away from your head or attach a diffuser so you can stop the heat from concentrating on one area. A heat protective spray is also a good way of ensuring your hair doesn’t dry out.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER

There are so many different shampoos and conditioners available on the market so make sure you pick the right one for your hair. Whether your hair is coloured, dry, damaged or oily, there is something for every type. It’s also good to get into the habit of applying a nourishing oil to your hair post wash to help lock in hydration.

USE A CLARIFYING SHAMPOO

We are all guilty of letting product build up in our hair over time. Hairsprays, chlorine, treatments and even the moisturisers in some shampoos and conditioners can leave residue in your hair, leaving it looking greasy and limp. Using a clarifying shampoo once a week to eliminate product build up.

LOOK AFTER YOUR SCALP

While it’s easy to focus on keeping your hair looking healthy and shiny, people often neglect to look after their scalp which can lead to dandruff or hair loss. Keeping your scalp happy is the key to having healthy hair. You can always ask your hairdresser to check the condition of your scalp and you can make sure you steer away from over-chemicalised products which will just dry your scalp out. Giving yourself scalp massages before showering is also an easy way to encourage blood flow and encourage good scalp health.

KEEP IT LOOSE

In winter, it’s a great time to let your hair down, rather than tied up tightly during hot summer months. Any style that is excessively tight across the scalp will put your hair and scalp under extreme tension. If you need to tie your hair up, chose a lose style.

PROTECT YOUR HAIR FROM CHEMICALS

Chemicals are no good any time of the year, especially in winter when your hair is exposed to harsher conditions. Make sure you are using products which are free from harmful chemicals such as sulfates and parabens.
