She is one of Australia’s most successful modelling exports, but Jess Hart is more than just a pretty face. After spending many years in the makeup chair for some of the biggest fashion brands in the world, Hart has used her knowledge of beauty products to create her own natural makeup line, Luma Cosmetics.

We caught up with Hart to find out how involved she was in the creation process, the challenges she faced creating the line and what’s the best advice she’s been given.

Congratulations on your makeup range LUMA! What was the inspiration behind LUMA?

Thank you it’s very exciting. As a model, I have spent a lot of time in a makeup chair over the years so I’ve grown to learn a lot about what works for me and what doesn’t. My beauty philosophy is very much less is more so I wanted to create a makeup line that enhances a woman’s natural beauty, not covers it up. It’s taken over three years to get it exactly where I want it but I’m so happy with the result.

How were you involved in the creation of LUMA?

There is not one product in the range that has not had my touch and 100% approval. I wasn’t sure if I would be able to create a range that I would actually use and be natural but I was willing to do whatever it took to achieve both. It took us a lot longer to make a natural line and we had to source everything from different places. We wanted to make each product right so some products might be 98% natural, some might be 88% natural but we did everything we could until we got it right. I’ve learnt so much about the product development process from ingredients to formulas and packaging.

What makes LUMA stand out from other makeup lines?

Luma is an all-natural makeup range that is premium and affordable. A lot of makeup brands are about concealing your natural features but LUMA aims to do the opposite. It is all about enhancing your natural colours and skin tones to reveal true natural beauty.

Why is it important to you that LUMA is a natural brand?

All things natural is something that has been instilled in me by my mother since I was a little girl so it made sense for LUMA to be an all natural range. LUMA has no parabens, no mineral oils, is not tested on animals, has no synthetic fragrances, low irritants and is 100% Australian made. We’ve managed to maintain all this and still ensure that range is sold at an attainable price point.

You’ve been working in the modeling industry for a long time. Any makeup secrets you’ve picked up along the way you can share with us?

After many years in the chair I’ve collectively learnt what works for me – if I was to give a tip it would be to work out what works for your complexion, your eye colour and your colourings. Work out if you have more pink in your skin tone or yellow. If you have brown eyes go for purple tones such as aubergine or lavender as it will bring out the brown. If you have yellow undertones in your skin go for peachy blushes instead of reds or roses and if you have blue eyes go for copper tones on your eyelids – I use my bronzer as an eyeshadow or fawn/ taupe colours work well too.

It took you 3 and a half years to create the range. What are some of the challenges you faced creating the line?

The most challenging part has been getting it to exactly where I want it and up to my standards while still keeping it as natural as possible, and at an affordable price point.

What are your makeup bag must haves?

LUMA Tinted Moisturizer with SPF15, LUMA Illuminating Highlighter and LUMA Nude Shimmer Lipstick.

What’s your daily skincare and makeup routine?

I’m pretty low maintenance but I always use an SPF during the day and moisturise morning and night and drink lots and lots of water!

Best advice you’ve been given?

It’s really silly one but for some reason I always come back to ‘Fake it until you make it’. I don’t like anything about being fake but there’s something about stepping outside your comfort zone and past your insecurities and just pretending that they don’t exist.

What exciting things do you have planned for 2015?

I hope to expand my brand further and do some travelling.
