Black and white reigned supreme on AAMI Victoria Derby Day, with fashionable racegoers embracing the traditional Derby dress code.

Rain, hail or shine, well-heeled revellers were set to perch trackside in their racing finery on Saturday, with racing royalty and the Birdcage’s most fashionable bringing their sartorial A game to proceedings. Where structure and modern fabrications seemed to be the order of the Carnival last year, this year saw soft laces and more feminine silhouettes play a major role. Ashley Hart epitomised lady-like glamour in monochrome embroidered Dolce & Gabbana, while Jessica Gomes embraced a more romantic shape in an Ellery number.

Headwear seems to be more sedate this season, with celebrities and fashion icons alike favouring metal headbands and fine lace veils over the avant-garde pieces we saw at last year’s Carnival. Jessica Gomes and Jodi Gordon appeared to have forgone the traditional dress code all together with no visible headwear from the front, however closer inspection revealed subtle metallic details towards the back of the head. Lindy Klim kept things simple, completing her look with a simply an orchid from her own bathroom, while Nadia Bartel proved that not even pregnancy can bump her off a race day best dressed list.
