Mushroom Magic – SS13/14
One of the most anticipated shows of the week, Romance Was Born’s Spring/Summer collection did not disappoint. The tone was set with the haunting voice of Paz Lenchantin filling the theatre. In typical Romance Was Born style, models walked the runway around a quirky installation which looked like a cross between the set of Alice and Wonderland and an extraterrestrial planet.
Romance Was Born duo Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales once again collaborated with Tanya Schultz (the artist behind PIP and POP, and the sugar and sand mandalas which popped up in the center of the stage) when creating their collection.
Psychedelic patterns, frilly skirts, lacy petticoats, delicate beading – this collection had a bit of everything. Evoking the spirit of the late sixties and early seventies, silhouettes were flowing, with loose kaftans, silk chiffon gowns, smocking and pussy bow blouses reflective of the styles of those eras.
After their previous collaboration with Marvel, Plunkett and Sales, turned to Disney’s world of fairytales for inspiration for their Mushroom Magic collection. The range began with crisp cottons, moving into pastels, silky neon brights and closed with dark jacquards.
Romance Was Born diehards will love the collection. The design aesthetic doesn’t stray far from the fashion forward style fans are used to. It’s great to see brands such as Romance Was Born push the boundaries of fashion and not let themselves get too restrained by commercialism.
