After a long awards season, where one film seemed to be the front runner in all categories (spoiler alert: all but one), the Oscars finally arrived, and with it, brought a volume of great red carpet fashion. From Gucci, to Givenchy, to Armani, to custom designs, our favourite style stars showed off more than their considerable acting talents. Without further adieu, here are our top ten favourite looks from the 2017 Oscars.
10. DAKOTA JOHNSON IN GUCCI
While Fifty Shades of Grey didn’t win any Oscars, its star, Dakota Johnson, took inspiration from the coveted trophies for her red carpet look. In golden Gucci, she left the leather and lace to her character on screen, and showcased a subtler take on sexy. The colour was perfect for the occasion, and her simple hair and make up made sure the look kept away from OTT territory.
9. JANELLE MONAE IN ELLIE SAAB COUTURE
Musician and star of two Oscar nominated films (Moonlight and Hidden Figures) Janelle Monae easily shed her suited image with a gorgeous couture Elle Saab gown. We loved the interplay of textures and the volume of the skirt against her subtle make up and jewelled hair. What a way to top off an acting debut!
8. KARLIE KLOSS IN STELLA McCARTNEY
Model Karlie Kloss could look amazing in literally anything, but her stunning, crisp white Stella McCartney gown has easily risen to one of her best dressed moments. The asymmetric sleeve, the fit-like-a-glove cut, and the classic colour all work together to make the some of all parts feel effortless (and bonus points for the ALCU pin on her hip).
7. DARBY STANCHFIELD IN GEORGES CHAKRA
Scandal star Darby Stanchfield also followed the asymmetrical white gown vibe, in sculptural and sheer gown by Georges Charkra. We loved the sheer to opaque nature of the sleeve, and the loose wave of her hair against the colour of the look work perfectly.
6. BRIE LARSON IN OSCAR DE LA RENTA
2016 winner and upcoming Kong: Skull Island star, Brie Larson took to the red carpet in an old Hollywood-style fishtail gown by Oscar de la Renta. We loved the exaggerated neckline and teased-out hemline, and the dark hue of the gown against her orange-red lip played perfectly against each other.
5. EMMA STONE IN GIVENCHY
Winner of Best Actress on the night after being nominated for Best Supporting Actress last year, the La La Land star looked every part the Oscar winner in a golden Givenchy fringed gown. The nod to old Hollywood was a smart move (mirroring her role in the jazz-infused musical she won for), and we loved that hair, make up, and accessories where kept to a minimum to allow the dress to shine on its own (cue ‘City of Stars’).
4. KIRSTEN DUNST IN CHRISTIAN DIOR
Who would have thought that Kirsten Dunst would crack the top five best dressed in 2017? With a role in a Best Picture nominated picture and a gorgeous Christian Dior gown to walk down the red carpet, it shouldn’t feel too strange. We loved the full silhouette on the gown and the peek-a-boo hem that showcased her shoe. Welcome back, Kirsten!
3. NICOLE KIDMAN IN ARMANI PRIVE
Nominated on the night and previous winner, Nicole Kidman, is no stranger to the Oscar red carpet. As a award show style veteran, she did not disappoint and looked incredible in an Armani Prive sheer gown. The champagne coloured, embellished gown was a great choice and one that sits perfectly in her illustrious red carpet career (can we talk about her gorgeous Balenciaga red gown?). While not a winner on the night, she was definitely a winner in the style stakes.
2. OLIVIA CULPO IN CUSTOM MARCHESA
Former Miss Universe Olivia Culpo may not have been up for any awards on the night, but her custom Marchesa gown was definitely a winner. Great Gatsby vibes, old Hollywood hair and make up, and a subtle black waist detail – worth it’s weight in gold.
1. TARAJI P. HENSON IN CUSTOM ALBERTA FERRETTI
Whoever said simplicity was best was certainly right. Hidden Figures and Empire star, Taraji P. Henson stole the show in a perfectly cut custom gown by Alberta Ferretti. With a thigh high split, a perfect fit, and necklace that would make Elizabeth Taylor jealous, she looked every part the movie star, and the velvet fabrication made a statement against the more delicate gowns on the red carpet. The slightly tousled hair and smokey make up made for a truly memorable look.
