Just when you thought the red carpet calendar was done for the time being, another appears! The 2016 MTV Movie Awards may have played host to many show stopping moments (including sneak peeks to some of the year’s most anticipated films, Suicide Squad and Captain America: Civil War) but equally as exciting was the fashion on the red carpet. Lace, leather, and a solid helping of black hued looks ruled the trends, but a pop of colour in the form of light fabric in cobalt and crimson balanced out the hard edged styling. Check out our favourites below!

9. HOLLAND RODEN IN CHRISTIAN SIRIANO

Teen Wolf star Holland Roden was one of the few stars opting for a bit of colour in her look. We loved the feminine styling of her Christian Siriano jumpsuit, and the cobalt colour played perfectly off her auburn locks.

8. HALLE BERRY IN NOAM HANOCH

Presenting Will Smith with the 2016 Generation Award, Halle Berry showed off her amazing abs in a midriff baring lace cocktail dress by Noam Hanoch. Playing off the lingerie as outwear trend, the angular lines against the intricate lace showed a little edge with a lot of sexy.

7. LIZZY CAPLAN IN SALLY LAPOINTE

Lizzy Caplan, while a little more formal than her counterparts, looked stunning in her sequin and sheer gown by Sally LaPointe. The sheerness of the skirt against the embellished bodice balanced the look and showcased her quirkly style.

6. DAISY RIDLEY IN ALEXANDER WANG

Well this is a lot different from her robes in Star Wars: The Force Awakens! Rising star, Daisy Ridley hit the red carpet in a 90s inspired mini by Alexander Wang, making her not only a winner on the night, but in the style stakes. The playful plaid mini was enhanced with metallic hardware, and tousled hair completed her look.

5. BRITTANY SNOW IN HANEY

Breaking up the sea of black hues on the carpet, Brittany Snow opted for a crimson red Haney mini. While it’s a similar silhouette we’ve seen at past events (most notably the Balmain army on the 2014 MTV VMAs carpet), we love the bold silhouette and bolder colour.

4. CHARLIZE THERON IN ALEXANDER MCQUEEN

Charlize Theron is never one to put a foot wrong on the red carpet, and in her rock chic Alexander McQueen look, her streak of landing on the best dressed list continues. The sheerness of the bodice overlaid with intricate embroidery and her sleek high pony and smokey eye were the perfect companions.

3. KENDALL JENNER IN KRISTIANA ADNEVIK AND DSQUARED2

Kendall Jenner has gone to great lengths to stand on her own outside her famous family, and this is the way to do it. Shunning the body con styles that her sisters favour, the Kristiana Adnevik dress was the perfect choice for this event, but the laced-up-to-there heels from Dsquared2 were the show stoppers.

2. GIGI HADID IN VERSACE

Recalling the favoured hair of beauty icon, Brigitte Bardot, model of the moment Gigi Hadid showed a strong suit game in head to toe Versace. We loved the pop of colour in the shirt against the pinstripe, and the peek of her bra added a little femininity to the masculine styling.

1. CARA DELEVINGNE IN BALMAIN

2016 is shaping up to be the year of Cara, with starring roles in both the upcoming Suicide Squad and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, but her velvet Balmain jumpsuit showed that she hasn’t totally left fashion behind. We loved the sexy cutouts against the heavy fabrication, and her dark taupe lip and loose hair.
