While it still hasn’t quite sunk in that it’s 2016 for most, those in the inner circle of the entertainment history are well and truly in the swing of the new year’s award season. A precursor to the Oscars, and not just for the awards, the style set hit one of 2016’s first red carpets with our favourite fashion stars, and a few outside surprises, taking out our top ten best dressed picks.
10. LADY GAGA IN ATELIER VERSACE
Her turn as The Countess in American Horror Story: Hotel has been informing her style for several red carpets over the last 12 months, and in Atelier Versace, Lady Gaga showed one of her best looks yet. We love the old Hollywood feel of the gown, and the minimal accessories and platinum blonde hair pull everything together.
9. LAVERNE COX IN ELIZABETH KENNEDY
Looking like a Grecian goddess, we loved Laverne Cox’s all white look. The Orange Is The New Black star wore Elizabeth Kennedy, and styled the simple, yet dramatic gown with jade accessories and an on trend burgundy lip.
8. JENNIFER LAWRENCE IN DIOR
While there was no surprise about who JLaw would be wearing, we still loved the crimson column gown from Dior. The cut outs added intrigue to an otherwise classic shape, and the statement necklace elevated the look.
7. KATE BOSWORTH IN DOLCE AND GABBANA
Kate Bosworth stunned on the red carpet, wearing one of the most elaborately embellished looks of the night, courtesy of Dolce and Gabbana. We love the pink hue and the OTT sparkle of the beading, and the simple hair and make up, which was the perfect accompaniment to a stand out piece.
6. TARAJI P. HENSON IN STELLA MCCARTNEY
A rising fashion star, we loved the chicness of Taraji P. Henson’s turn in Stella McCartney. The Empire actress showed that simplicity is always better, accompanying the white gown with an art deco clutch and minimal jewellery.
5. ZENDAYA IN MARCHESA
As a part of the new guard of new Hollywood, Zendaya has rarely put a foot wrong on the red carpet, and in a rich hued Marchesa gown, she kept her winning streak going. The tiered gown was just the right amount of dramatic for the red carpet, but the playful neckline made sure it was still youthful.
4. GUILIANA RANCIC IN ALEX PERRY
We loved this silhouette of Cheyenne Pozzi at the Logies earlier last year, and are still in love with the amazing Alex Perry look now, this time as worn by E!‘s Guiliana Rancic. The tangerine hue is amazing against her skin tone, and the addition of side panel cut outs show a new side (pun not intended) to the look.
3. JENNIFER LOPEZ IN GIAMBATTISTA VALLI HAUTE COUTURE
Finally putting to bed the illusion netting and ‘naked’ dresses, Jenny from the Block has finally stepped out in a dress worthy of her diva reputation. The Giambattista Valli Haute Couture gown was the perfect shade of canary, and the caped sleeve added interest. The accessories and make up look were the perfect finish.
2. ROSIE HUNTINGTON-WHITELEY IN ATELIER VERSACE
Star of Mad Max: Fury Road/every woman’s gym inspo, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley rivalled the coveted statues, looking absolutely radiant in Atelier Versace. The golden lamé fabric shimmered on her skin perfectly, and her soft waves completed the look, making her red carpet turn look effortless.
1. CATE BLANCHETT IN GIVENCHY
Who else could we pick for top spot other than Cate Blanchett?! Always a fashion renegade, Cate opted for a pastel pink Givenchy fringed gown which, while possibly OTT on anyone else, she carried with grace and style. Her side swept bob and soft pink lip perfectly complemented the look, and minimal accessories made sure the intricate fringing wasn’t overpowered.
