CUT YOUR FLOWERS

Who doesn’t love receiving a delivery of beautiful blooms? They instantly brighten your day and any room. We’ve teamed up with the fantastic team at Fresh Flowers to bring you our top tips to help your blooms last longer.

CUT YOUR FLOWERS

Before putting your flowers in a vase, you need to trim the ends off as they will have already started to seal, meaning your blooms won’t absorb water as efficiently. Make sure you cut on a 45 degree angle to open up as much of the stem as possible to absorb water. When you are cutting your stems, cut them underwater so they absorb water straight away rather than air.

TRIM LOWER LEAVES

There shouldn’t be any leaves in the water as these tend to go mouldy quickly. Remove any lower leaves leaving only clean stems in the water.

USE A CLEAN VASE
The worst enemy of fresh flowers is bacteria so make sure your vase is completely clean before putting your new blooms in.

PUT YOUR FLOWERS IN ACIDIC WATER

It sounds strange but by putting your flowers in water that is slightly acidic, it will prevent callous forming on your flower stems which means water is free to flow up the flowers. Flowers usually come with flower food which will do the trick otherwise you can add vinegar or lemon juice. Less than a tenth of your water volume should be the acid.

PUT A LITTLE SUGAR IN THE WATER

Like you and I, flowers need carbohydrates. By adding a few pinches of sugar into your vase, this will give your flowers something to feed on.

KEEP FLOWERS OUT OF DIRECT SUNLIGHT

The cooler and darker the room, the longer your flowers will last. This also applies to heated rooms. We are all guilty of pumping up the heater in winter to try and keep warm.

TRIM STEMS EVERY FEW DAYS

Trim your flower’s stems every 2 to 3 days. This ensures that maximum absorption of water will be achieved keeping your flowers fresher for longer. Changing the water when you do this is also great as it gets rid of any bacteria that has built up.

Now that you know how to keep your flowers looking fresher longer, why not treat yourself to a bouquet from Fresh Flowers! They deliver flowers to Melbourne and all major Australian cities and there is a great range to suit any budget so there are no excuses!
