One of the most talked about burglary crimes in Hollywood history, the gang nicknamed the ‘Bling Ring’ committed the unspeakable, and got away with it. Well, at least for a while. Stealing more than $3 million worth of jewellery and clothing from celebrities, Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan to name a few, the shocking faces behind the crimes were just a bunch of “club-hopping valley kids motivated by vanity and celebrity-worship”.
The act inspired Vanity Fair writer, Nancy Jo Sales, to write her acclaimed piece: “The Suspect Wore Louboutins”, exploring the crimes into depth through interviews with members of the Bling Ring. Gritty, raw and deep, funny and sometimes shallow, the piece got the public as close as they could possibly be to the criminals themselves.
Until now. Acclaimed writer and director, as well as style icon, Sofia Coppola has done her take on The Bling Ring and the buzz couldn’t be louder. Notorious for her eccentric and dark arthouse films such as Virgin Suicides, Lost In Translation and Marie Antoinette, the film explores the rise of celebrity culture and its dark, twisted allure, whilst divulging into the lives of members in the Bling Ring.
Starring Emma Watson, Taissa Farmiga and Claire Julien, the film truly speaks for itself. Expect only madness and pure satisfaction.
Catch it at Nova Cinemas on Lygon Street starting this Thursday, 8th August.
