The most talked about Grammy’s look for 2014 would have to be Beyonce’s. Teaming a soft smokey eye with a bold lip and her new cropped do, she took a bold leap from her usual cascading long mane and bronzed glow to give us a more sultry and edgy performance. Her smouldering eye and red wine lip can be easily achieved with less product than you imagine. However, be conscious of going too heavy on the eyes, keep it light. Beyonce has used a deep colour for eyelids, but her makeup artist has applied it in a soft sweep as to not compete with a bold lip, which can look too heavy. Our motto when recreating this Grammy’s winner, is to apply softly and let the lips be the statement. I’ll be explaining how to get Beyonce’s look with fabulous ModelCo products which suit this look perfectly. ModelCo products are perfect for everyday use, are extremely affordable and the best part is there is something for everyone. They promote healthy skin and sun protection and are true innovators of the industry with cutting edge products.

Perfecting the base

Firstly, we work on perfecting the base. Priming is essential, especially for a night on the town. We like ModelCo Face Base Skin Primer ($38), to create an even flawless base for foundation to sit on and adhere to. This primer also helps makeup stay put for up to 10 hours.

Next is foundation. Beyonce, has gone for a satin finish in her makeup, this means it has a soft glow like regular skin, but it is not completely matte, nor is it dewy. To achieve this finish you want to go for a cream based foundation that is oil-free and non-matte finish. We love ModelCo Skin Perfect Foundation Stick ($32). It glides on easily, has excellent coverage and moisturises, protects and minimises fine lines without containing oil. Use a foundation brush or sponge and start lightly and build where necessary to keep foundation fresh and light.

Conceal, bronze and blush

foundyAfter the foundation, the next step is to conceal (if needed), using the Power Stick Duo ($24). Sweep under the eyes with the stick and move the product around with a finger, pressing in with fingers or a sponge. Remember to keep it light. Beyonce has kept her base very natural, with just a sweep of bronzer on the cheeks and hairline/sides of forehead. The bronzer she has used has a matte finish. Try ModelCo Bronze ($22) to give cheekbones a light dusting. Keeping it very minimal. With cheek colour, Beyonce has a soft, subtle blush. Brush cheeks lightly on the apples, blending up the cheekbone, with ModelCo Blush in Amaretto Sunset; for those with paler complexions, try Cosmopolitan ($18).amaretto1000x1000_1_3
Achieving the smoky eye
Beyonce’s smoky eye look is much simpler than it may appear. Take ModelCo Eyeshadow Trio in Arabian Nights and begin by adding the lightest shade to the lid of the eye. Then take the medium shade, (this step can be skipped or reduced if you want to keep your look minimal), and using a small brush, sweep along the crease of the eye, careful not to go onto the lid, and blend upwards lightly toward the brow. Take this shade and a thin brush and sweep underneath the eye, under the lash line all the way along. Next you want to take the darker black shade and your eyebrow brush and apply in the outer corner of the eye, blending along the lashline to the crease and along the outer third of the crease, both top and bottom. Get a clean blending brush or eyeshadow brush and blend the shadow to soften. Next use ModelCo’s Colour Box Eye Pencil in Black ($18) and line the top lid and in the water line of the lower lid generously. A tip is to set the eyeliner on the top lid with black eyeshadow by pressing it in to the line with a flat brush. This stops eyeliner from melting of the top lid and smudging, and also adds intensity to the top lash line. Don’t forget mascara! We love ModelCo’s Fat Lash Volumising Mascara ($18) in black.

Hot lips

Lips are the standout aspect of this look. To keep the look more simple, you can pare the heavy eyes back with a nude lip, but for the bold Beyonce look, go for a deep wine colour or bright crimson. First line lips with ModelCo’s Illusion Lip Pencil ($22) which gives the lips the illusion of being fuller and more pouty (we all want that) and fill with ModelCo’s Party Proof Lipstick in deep Vanity Fair, or for a brighter statement, After Hours ($17). A little trick Beyonce’s makeup artist has used, is to take the lipstick and draw over the cupids bow, rather than dipping down. This is a fabulous trick if you want to make lips appear fuller. Its a must do for women with thinner lips.

Don’t forget the brows

To finish off this stellar makeup look, brows must be brushed up and filled. Try the ModelCo Designer Brow Kit ($39) which is a fabulous kit including wax (for shaping) and three versatile shades of powder and an application brush. Defining brows is imperative for a finished makeup and it does not mean that you will end up looking like Oscar The Grouch. The rule of thumb is to go lighter than your hair. For example, for day wear, I use a pencil meant for blondes even though I am brunette. It gives my brows a full look without being heavy and dark.

Now you have mastered Beyonce’s makeup look, it’s time to get to work on your replica custom white Michael Costello gown… better get the sewing machine out!
