BRAND PROFILE: BYREDO

Christian Dior once said “A woman’s perfume tells more about her than her handwriting.” Coco Chanel was more blunt about the matter saying “A woman who doesn’t wear perfume has no future.” Between trying to find something to wear in an overflowing wardrobe, to dealing with work and a busy social life, the importance of perfume and a woman’s scent can often get lost. Enter BYREDO. Founded in 2006 by Ben Gorham, BYREDO has set about making fragrances important again. Gorham’s unique heritage, born in Sweden to an Indian mother and Canadian father, makes BYREDO a unique brand. After growing up in Toronto, New York and Stockholm and graduating from the Stockholm Art School with a degree in fine arts, Gorham’s career path took a sharp turn after a chance meeting with perfumer Pierre Wulff. Deciding to pour his creative energy into creating scents rather than paintings, despite no formal training, Gorham teamed up with world renowned perfumers Olivia Giacobetti and Jerome Epinette, and so BYREDO was born.

The BYREDO brand has strong ties to creativity, art and lifestyle. It occupies a unique spot in the market through its understated approach through simple compositions and the highest quality of raw materials available.

The BYREDO product line includes 12 eau du parfums with matching body lotions, shower gels and classic soaps. The home fragrance line has 10 unique fragrances presented in 225gram candles which means your house can now smell as nice as you!

BYREDO cult products include the Gypsy Water Eau De Parfum which smells like fresh soil, deep forests and campfires (key notes include bergamot, lemon, pepper, juniper berries, pine needles, amber, sandalwood and vanilla), Rose Noir a darker take on a traditional rose scent (key notes include grapefruit, rose damascena, cistus, moss and musk) and my personal favourite, Inflorescence, a subtle yet dynamic fragrance which captures the strength and beauty of wild blossoms just as they reach their dramatic peak (key notes include: magnolia, fresh jasmine, lily of the valley, rose petals and pink freesia.

Over the years, BYREDO has collaborated with Fantastic Man, Acne, M/M Paris and Bianca Jagger on a range of unique products in additional to their mainline, which has added to the brand’s exclusiveness and cult status.

Priced at the top of the luxury perfume market, BYREDO might be out of your usual perfume price point, but for the uniqueness of scent and effort that goes into creating each product, buying your very own BYREDO fragrance it is certainly money well spent.

You can buy BYREDO in store and online from Mecca Cosmetica.
