Two weeks into January, and the awards season has already started! The first event? The 2015 People’s Choice Awards.

While we’re yet to see the heights of fashion reached at the Golden Globes or the Oscars, plenty of fresh trends were shown, as well as new takes on classics. We take you through the major trends from the night and the best looks on the red carpet.

The sheer pencil skirt trend was seen to be alive and well, with Sarah Hyland and Renee Bargh both embracing the trend…but with a ladylike twist. With Sarah’s embellished overlay and Renee’s lacework, the edgy trend feels feminine and fresh. Also on trend was Fashion Police host Giuliana Rancic, and while she opted not to show off her thighs, was on trend in her mint tulle and lace Tony Ward A line cocktail dress.

Black and white is always in style on the red carpet, but at the PCA, it was all about a playful proportion. The Newsroom‘s Olivia Munn took on the trend in a boxy crop over pencil skirt look by Giambattista Valli Haute Couture, while Katherine McPhee went for bombshell in Balmain. Co-opting two major trends, Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting wore a cheeky cut out culotte jumpsuit.

CROWN JEWELS

While some of the other trends were in a more muted colour palate, one certainly was not. Rich, royal blues, purples and deep fuchsias ruled the red carpet, with newly-wed Gabrielle Union, new mama, Kristen Bell, and the ever stylish Portia de Rossi all joining in the fun.

Soft creams and flesh tones have been a huge trend this past season, and on the PCA red carpet, it shows no signs of stopping. Grey’s Anatomy star, Ellen Pompeo stunned in a blush Elie Saab jumpsuit, while Kimberly Perry of The Band Perry opted for a slinky nude gown and L’Dezen by Payal Shah jewels. In a dramatic departure from her usual red carpet style, host Anna Faris chose a volumous cream two piece from Juan Carlos Obando to walk the red carpet in.

Who said florals were just for spring? Winter florals were a huge hit on the PCA carpet with Stana Katic (wearing Carolina Herrera), Lisa Edelstein (in Naeem Khan), and Katrina Smirnoff  (in Michael Costello) all taking on the romantic trend.

The PCA’s are over, but we won’t have to wait long for the next batch of red carpet looks!
